John Collorafi (Catholic) and Craig Truglia (Orthodox) give a history of the rebaptism controversy in the 200s from dueling perspectives. While Collorafi gives the mainstream presentation of events as given by saints such as Augustine, Jerome, and Vincent de Lerins; Truglia gives a brand new perspective based on the primary sources from the controversy itself. The letters of Saints Firmilian, Dionysius of Alexandria, Cyprian, and Cornelius of Rome reveal that Cyprian's position on rebaptism was the consensus of the Church and that Saint Pope Stephen's position, though representing some sort of custom, was in fact concocted as a flash point during a jurisdictional dispute that had broken out between Cyprian and himself. Cyprian's ecclesiology is likewise vindicated during this controversy as Truglia reveals Cyprian had in fact quoted a letter of the Roman Synod back at Pope Saint Stephen in defying them, and the same euphemisms were quoted by Dionysius of Alexandra likewise in defiance to Rome.
