Richard M Jones History Bites - Episode 48: The Tragedy of the Morecambe Bay Cockle Pickers
In the early hours of 5th February 2004 a distress message led coastguards and police to an area of Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, that was the scene of death and terror. Dozens of illegal immigrants that had been trafficked by criminal gangs had been spending the early morning picking cockles when they were cut off by the tide. 23 of them died. Today a memorial to those lost is next to the RNLI Lifeboat station, a sculpture a few miles away on the cliffs overlooks the site itself.
