Hey Guys!! This video is an overview on the 12 cranial nerves. It is a simplified overview and a mnemonic to memorize the order of the cranial nerves as well as their function. I Olfactory - Sensory - Senses smell - Present patient with peppermint oil and see if they can smell it II Optic - Sensory - Detects vision - Use Visual Acuity chart III Oculomotor - Motor - Controls eye muscles for eye movement, Controls pupil constriction, Controls focusing the lens - Have patient blink, use pen light to test PERRLA IV Trochlear - Motor - Controls superior oblique muscle - Have patient look down V Trigeminal - Both - Detects head and face sensations, controls chewing movements - Have patient clench jaw, then touch forehead, cheek and jaw to see if patient senses touch in those areas VI Abducens - Motor - Controls lateral rectus muscles - Have patient look from side to side VII Facial - Both - Detects taste, allows facial expression - Have patient smile, puff cheeks and lift eyebrows; look for symmetry VIII Vestibulocochlear - Sensory - Senses balance, senses sound - Have patient close his/her eyes and stand on one foot. Snap fingers on either side of the head to detect hearing IX Glossopharyngeal - Both - Controls muscles for swallowing, detects tongue sensations - Have patient swallow X Vagus - Both - Detects thoracic and abdominal organ sensations, controls thoracic and abdominal movements - Check gag reflex, check pulse XI Accessory - Motor - Controls trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles Have patient shrug his/her shoulders, Move head from side to side XII Hypoglossal - Motor - Controls tongue movement - Stick tongue out and speak Mnemonic: Nerve Name: Oh Oh Oh To Touch And Feel A Virgin Girls' Vagina And Hymen Nerve Class: Some Say Marry Money But My Brother Says Big Boobs Matter Most
