Welcome. In this video, we take a gentle look at how Japanese is written. Japanese uses three kinds of characters:Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji. Kanji originally came from China. Later, in Japan, Hiragana and Katakana were developed from Kanji. Hiragana has soft, rounded shapes and is used for everyday words, expressing feelings, and connecting sentences. Katakana has more angular shapes and is used for words from other languages, new terms, and words we want to emphasize. Both Hiragana and Katakana are phonetic scripts, where each character represents one sound. Kanji are characters that carry meaning. About 1,900 Kanji are commonly used in Japanese today. By combining Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji, Japanese becomes a very unique and expressive language. At first, you can read and write Japanese using Hiragana alone. By learning a little every day and enjoying the process, the characters will begin to feel natural. In the next videos, we will start with Hiragana and learn the shapes, stroke order, and sounds slowly and carefully.
