Why would we need to measure the wear at all? Isn't it sufficient just to grind (or scrape) the bed and mating parts back to within specs? Well, yes.. BUT you give yourself an easier task if you know how much to take off and take note of how much material is removed so that eg. you can foresee if here will be problems with alignment of leadscrew to the new geometry. This goes for both vertical- and horizontal alignment. In my case I stipulate that the lost material will be around 12/100 mm. Not much and it may not be a problem, but if so, then either a repositioning of the leadscrew or raising back the saddle with Turcite/Rulon (or eg. bronze, even brass) is a safe way. I will however also consider the option of griniding off the needed thickness from the front- and rear portion of the saddle. Also, the saddle will be moved a little sideways which can either be "adjusted back" by eg. Rulon on the rear wear face (be it the rear of the front way or if modified to wide-guide, the rear of the rear way) or repositioning the leadscrew
