At the risk of judging a book by its cover, you probably wouldn’t look at these 10 ‘unique’ individuals and figure that their arrests were wrongful. Originating in the 1840’s soon after the invention of the photograph, the original purpose of the mug shot was to enable law enforcement to have and maintain a photographic record of an arrestee so as to allow for identification by victims and investigators. While local police involved in these cases will have no problem identifying these 10 perpetrators, the mug shots will live on to entertain future generations of law enforcement officials. In fact, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio gave the mug shot registry of Maricopa County some additional flare by introducing an interactive “Mug Shot of the Day” voting feature on the County website. So what makes a mug shot weird? Anyone can stand out with a tattoo or two, or a goofy facial expression. These 10 people bring something to the table that, plain and simply, you aren’t likely to see in regular, everyday life. Some, like Robert Burt, who arrived ready for his mug shot wearing a t-shirt depicting his own earlier mug shot, are in on the joke. Some, like Ronaldo Silva, who was booked in drag in an ill-fated attempt to escape prison, are decidedly not.
