Mrs Darby Donahoe-Lopez of Ochoa Elementary School, Texas talks about her success with science in her school. "I'm a teacher of 4th and 5th grade science lab at Ochoa Elementary. We we got everything setup and I started taking the lessons myself, I was so impressed and I realised the depth that I could take this particular science program using the computers bacuse the children that get the lesson can move on to a higher level at their own pace. The childrten that are taking a little bit more time to grasp what the concept is about can take the lesson over and over again from the bottom up and just by organizing your classroom waht is given you to teach allows the teacher to have a confidence level to walk in and to knoiw waht is needed to be taught is being taught and then you can take that and see what the kids need to have extra added in, instead of teaching everything wihc is almost impossible to teach a child everthing that they need to know about science in a 45minute period once a day. The student will be taken from the beginning of the school year all the way to the end and have everything they need to have in their pocket to mange their life. The science is life and the life is science. If you can teach science and get the boys, then you've got the girls. So its just just seeing the scene when you walk in - the lights are on with the kids because they're so many things that go with each lesson - We have taught them self reliance, they have to depend on each other. They have assignments - One gets the worksheet, one gets the science experiment, one operates the maths. Its just they have to decide who does that themselves so it the team work that goes on with this system that's great too." The management system has the TAKS (Texas Assessed Knowledge Skills) loaded in. Everyday you can click on any given student and you can see exactly what's happeing with their TAKS - whether they understand a particular knowledge, or where they are at that particular TAKS. And bacause of that, that helps us to teach - not to the test but beyond the test as well. So there are things in here that goes into a little bit more depth than what they need for the test, but it teaches everything that they need for the State assessment. Each lesson is a very strong lesson. It goes deeper than what they need. Your not teaching to the test - I don't like that as a teacher - just to teach to the test. So when you go deeper than the knowledge that they need, kids know that. They know when your teaching to the test and when they have to have certain bits of knowledge. Also, what is so exciting, the management system means that I am not having to grade papers and I can sit with a child immediately after they finish a test and look at what they missed or congratulate them on their top grade or reteach immediately at that point, so we have conferences at my station all day long. The children that are Spanish dominant that come into this lab have been kind of a mixed bag of just thier language. They have had the opportunity to take their lesson only in Spanish but in English and it really has helped them to grasp the lesson on both levels.
