(2 Feb 1995) German/Eng/Nat An estimated 250,000 people have been evacuated from the south eastern Netherlands. Many were ordered to leave their homes by soldiers. Some have gone to stay with relatives but others are staying in flood shelters. The Dutch Queen Beatrix has been visiting an evacuation centre at Groesbeek ten kilometres south of Nijmegen. Queen Beatrix arrived at the rescue center in Groesbeek called "De Poort" . Earlier Thursday she visited the town of Beneden Leeuwen to check how a soaked dyke was holding out. Her next stop was at the town of Ochten where she talked to soldiers and divers who had helped in the all-night operation to patch up a dike. But it was here at Groesbeek that she met with people like Hilda who have suffered the floods first hand. She has lost her home. SOUNDBITE: "The dyke is very shaky, it was not safe. Everybody was evacuated, we waited till the last minute to be evacuated." SUPER CAPTION: Hilda David SOUNDBITE: "The people have generally been evacuated from Groesbeek as it is in a certain sense, very dangerous there when the dykes do not hold. The people are very happy to be in a secure, dry and warm place.
