A tribute that I've been thinking about for quite a while, dedicated to the ever-likeable, elegant and handsome actor with breezy easy-going onscreen charm, Don Ameche (1908-1993). The son of an Italian father and an English-Irish mother, as a young man he was encouraged to become a lawyer, but became entranced with the stage while a boy and he found his way from stage to radio, and soon to 20th Century Fox in the 1930s. A quiet but generous man in real life, Ameche often gave away large amounts of money to the less fortunate, and as a workaholic his wife and children didn't get to see as much of him as they would have liked. Although a professional and a perfectionist on the set (and he rarely saw any of his films), he was also known to be a mischievous practical joker, as his costars often discovered. Although he was rarely cast in any comedic parts, it's kind of obvious to me when I watch him that Don would have excelled in those kinds of roles. Either way, he's great in everything I've seen him in. There's just something about that endearing baritone voice and those puppy dog brown eyes. Ameche was popular with audiences, but in the late 1940s he became frustrated with the frequently bland and unchallenging roles the studio was handing him, so he chose not to renew his contract. He found it difficult to find work, but he did manage to find some projects on television, but by the late 50s he found himself adrift, and he dropped off the radar in 1975, only to re-emerge in 1983 when director John Landis sought him out for a scene-stealing character role in "Trading Places". It marked the beginning of a new phase in the last part of his career, and his inspiring performance in Ron Howard's "Cocoon" (1985) would win him an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. He continued to work into the mid-1990s, winning the Best Actor Prize at the Venice Film Festival for "Things Change" (1988). In 1993, despite the fact that he was ill with prostate cancer, he completed the voice work for Walt Disney's "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey", and "Corrina, Corrina" ( which would not be released until 1995). Not long after completing the latter he passed away peacefully at his son's home in Arizona. Considering how he made such a magnificent career comeback, it's surprising that Ameche is still very underappreciated today. And I don't doubt that in his day the ladies flocked to theatres to see him. I know I would have! I used an instrumental version of "It Had To Be You" performed by the 101 Strings Orchestra. Notice that at times it sounds as if a telephone is ringing, and that's not a coincidence! Don's performance in "The Story Of Alexander Graham Bell" (1938), gave the world the catch phrase, "Hand me the Ameche!". I used clips from "In Old Chicago", "Alexander's Ragtime Band", "Hollywood Cavalcade" (all 1938), and "Corrina Corrina". The rest of the footage comes from his A&E Biography. You might have to turn up the volume a little for the clip at the end, one of my favorite quotes from the film "Heaven Can Wait' (1943) - Ameche himself considered that performance to be his best.
