Conquering the Hill - the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb story (2019)

For Jaguar, racing really is in their blood, not just in terms of the racing DNA engineered into the cars they build but also getting involved in motorsport projects. In terms of home grown motorsport events in South Africa, you don't get better than the Simola Hillclimb - an event that Jaguar teamed up with in 2014 as title sponsor, grow it into the A list event on the SA motorsport calendar. Having competed in the event a few times, I absolutely love the thrill and mindset shift required as a driver to take on what is a super fast and dangerous hillclimb. It doesn't matter what times you posted over the weekend, it all comes down to that last run of the day - that ultimate dash for glory. So when Jaguar approached me to compete in the 2019 event, I saw a wonderful opportunity to tell a different story - create content that cares less about the end result but rather invites the viewer into the pits, to get inside the helmets and the heads of the Jaguar drivers and hopefully appreciate just what it takes to conquer this hill. As a producer its just so refreshing when a brand gives you carte blanche to run with it and tell a story that encapsulates who they are, without worrying about the usual forced brand messaging like opening and closing billboards. Personally, it was a crazy weekend with producing the show as well as recording studio links for Ignition TV and doing a review of F-Pace SVR for the channel in one of my actual runs up the hill AND of course, trying to focus on racing too. It genuinely was a fantastic project to work on and when I look at the end result, I am so super chuffed and proud of what my team put together! Enjoy the show.
