Crimea referendum: Thousands hit the streets in protests ahead of vote

Subscribe to ITN News: http://bit.ly/1bmWO8h Thousands of people have taken to the streets for two rival protests ahead of a controversial referendum over whether Crimea should break away from Ukraine and join Russia. In Moscow, a major rally was held in support of the vote. Wearing matching red clothes and singing World War Two songs, the demonstrators filled the central square in the city. But in Ukraine, Tatars who want Crimea to stay in their country held their own rally -- saying the referendum would be a 'violation' of their constitution. And the conflict won't end with tomorrow's vote, with Ukrainian foreign affairs minister Andriy Deshchytsia insisting they would not recognise the result of the referendum as legal. The vote has triggered the worst crisis in relations between the East and West since the Cold War, with the West warning sanctions will follow if Russia acts on it. Russian military took control of the Crimea region after protesters ousted former President Viktor Yanukovich, angry at his decision to scrap a trade deal with Europe in favour of a closer economic relationship with Moscow. Russia claims it was forced to intervene to protect its people. But some fear it could be the first step in a full-scale invasion. Report by Charlotte Cross.
