Mr Rohit Pratap, a Consultant ENT Surgeon, explains that a tonsillectomy is a surgical operation that is performed if you are suffering from recurrent bouts of tonsillitis that are interfering with your capacity to function on a daily basis. Typically, you will be seen as a day case patient. Under a full general anaesthesia, it would take 20-30 minutes. Tonsils can be removed in one of two ways: fully removing the tonsils or shaving the capsule surrounding the tonsils. After a tonsillectomy, you would usually see a dramatic improvement in the patient's quality of life.
