For Suntory Whisky‘s centennial celebrations, filmmaker Sofia Coppola crafts a special tribute video looking back at the brand’s storied history. Coppola was notably the director of the Oscar-winning film Lost in Translation, in which Bill Murray‘s character Bob Harris was asked to advertise Suntory’s Hibiki 17 whisky in the now iconic “Suntory Time!” scene. With the 1968 track “Crimson and Clover” by Tommy James & The Shondells playing in the background, Coppola’s new “Suntory Time” ad starts in the present with Keanu Reeves and Kunichi Nomura seen having a glass of whisky together with friends. The video then snaps to collages of various Suntory references and campaigns from the past including a shot of Murray in Lost in Translation, an ad featuring Francis Ford Coppola alongside Akira Kurosawa, and a campaign starring a young Keanu Reeves. Closing the 100th-anniversary commercial is a clip featuring American singer Sammy Davis Jr., who was enlisted for a Cannes Lions Grand Prix ad in 1974. “The Suntory Whisky Anniversary Tribute tells the remarkable story of the brand’s heritage and whisky-making legacy over the last 100 years, depicting the meaning of “Suntory Time” through the eyes of its creator,” writes Suntory in the description. “More than an iconic line in a brilliant film, “Suntory Time” continues to evolve and gain recognition in Japanese whisky culture.
