How we process sensory information
Some things may be high arousing and others may be low arousing. Being able to modulate arousal levels effectively is the ability to regulate the degree to which a person is influenced by different sensory input. Children with sensory modulation disorders typically have a hard time regulating the effects of different sensory input. They appear over responsive (fearful, defensive) to under responsive (lacking awareness of movement of input). These children typically have difficulty with emotional/behavioral regulation as well.
