In this oil painting tutorial, I’ll show you step-by-step how to paint realistic eggs in the Old Master style using the grisaille and glazing technique. This beginner-friendly lesson will help you master the fundamentals of classical realism so you can paint near anything you want. Three eggs were chosen as the subject because they are easy to paint but require a high degree of accuracy when applying the light/shadow gradients. First, the image is created as a monochrome grisaille and then glazed in two passes. White paint is worked into the wet, colored glazes to easily create a sfumato effect. This exercise can be done entirely without solvents. The working method essentially corresponds to the painting technique of the old masters in oil painting and is still highly regarded today, with unmatched results. 0:00 Introduction 0:42 Drawing 1:07 Grisaille 5:41 First glazing 11:29 Second glazing 16:07 Result and conclusion Paints used: Grisaille Titanium White (Blockx) Neutral Tint (Old Holland) Glazing Yellow Ochre (Blockx) Ultramarine Blue (Winsor & Newton) Burned Umber (Blockx) Burned Sienna (Old Holland) Titanium White (Schmincke Norma) Medium M.Graham Walnut Alkyd Medium Brushes used: Raphael Kevrin Mongoose Hair Da Vinci cow hair Da Vinci black sable HABICO glazing brush pony hair 👆 LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for more art tutorials!
