The Yaxi Highway is an expressway connecting Ya'an City and Xichang City in Sichuan Province, China. It is an important section in Sichuan Province of the Beijing-Kunming Expressway (China National Expressway G5), the fourth capital radial line in China's expressway network "7918". The Ya'an-Xichang Expressway was started on March 19, 2007, the entire line was opened to traffic on April 28, 2012; and it passed the completion acceptance on August 28, 2020. The Yaxi Expressway starts from Ya'an South Interchange in the north and ends at Mianping Interchange in the south. The total length of the line is 239.844 kilometers. The road is a two-way four-lane expressway with a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour. The total investment of the project is RMB 16.366 billion. The opening of the Yaxi Highway has reduced the driving time from Chengdu to Xichang from 9 hours to 5 hours, completely changing the history of inconvenient transportation in the Hengduan Mountains, driving the major Yi ethnic group-inhabited areas in this country out of poverty and becoming rich, and promoting ethnic integration, which has important social and economic significance. A complete set of tunnel survey technology based on geological structure damage zoning has been established, an energy-saving mode for effectively utilizing natural wind in tunnels and a ventilation well optimization method have been pioneered, innovative construction and treatment technologies for ultra-deep buried (1648 density) rock burst sections and high-pressure water-rich fault crushing sections of tunnels have been developed, and key technical problems in the construction and operation of extra-long deep buried highway tunnels in complex and dangerous mountainous areas have been solved. The construction team invented a method for dragging and erecting steel tube trusses with small radius and S-shaped curves in complex mountainous areas, and developed technologies and equipment for the conversion of high-altitude steel tube truss through-hole systems and high-altitude dismantling of guide beams, creating four world firsts. For the first time, the steel tube concrete composite column structure and high-throw vibration-free C80 high-strength concrete technology were applied to the world's tallest pier of the same type of structure (pier height 182.64 meters).
