Gamaya, music by Joan Szymko, is based on text from a traditional Sanskrit chant: asoto ma sat gamaya, tamaso ma jyotir gamaya, mrityor ma amritam gamaya, OM, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti. From ignorance lead me to truth, from darkness lead me to light, from mortality to the immortal--lead me. Peace in thought, peace in word, peace in action. It is performed by the Aurora Chorus of Portland, Oregon at its Winter 2011 concert, "Only Light, Only Love." Joan Szymko, Aurora's Director, conducts this piece with Signe Luske as accompanist, and features Mary Ellen Grace on saxophone. NOTE: Video was taken from three different performances, although using only one sound track, so there are times when the sound/visual is not in sync. Any disagreement in sound and conducting movements are purely the fault of this humble editor. Also during the performance, the choir was bathed in hot purple and pink lights, so the saturation is high, and may not match clip to clip. Aurora Chorus, 120 women strong and currently celebrating its 20th anniversary season, performs two concerts each year along with numerous outreach performances, and strives to inspire and reflect the universal yearning for peace by giving voice to women.
