This brief video highlights the habitat and diversity of marine life that established at Narrowneck Reef by 2012. Narrowneck Multi-Purpose Reef is an artificial submerged reef breakwater that was constructed in 1999 by McQuade Marine using geotextile mega-containers, or sandbags. The innovative container-based structure was installed using a split-hull hopper dredge, which was able to construct the reef at about half the rock estimate for a comparable reef. The reef was constructed primarily as a coastal protection structure as part of the City of Gold Coast's Northern Gold Coast Beach Protection Strategy (NGCBPS), with the secondary objective to "improve surfing". ICM were the Project Engineers to develop the NGCBPS for the City of Gold Coast, with a range of specialist consultants providing expert input into the strategy and reef design, including the Griffith Centre for Coastal Management, Water Research Laboratory, WBM and ASR. Following construction of the reef, the reef quickly established new marine "soft" habitat created by the non-woven geotextile substrate and became a popular dive and fishing site.
