Quantity over quality. That seems to be the theme with the references in Scream 4. After Scream 3 had closed the book on Sidney Prescott and the Scream franchise back in 2000, the rise of the Hollywood horror movie remake, gave precedence for more story to be told, and so Scream 4 was made after a very tumultuous production. Although Kevin Williamson is credited for Scream 4's script, much of his original content had been excised or repurposed, leading the finished film to feature a lot of the same sort of references that we saw in Scream 3; primarily being callbacks to the previous Scream films. However, as Scream 3 did lean heavily into its overuse of generic horror movie clichés, Scream 4 instead seems to rely heavily on its aesthetic, presenting a Woodsboro that is full of teens who envelop their bedroom walls in horror movie nostalgia. And while I do appreciate the visual stimuli of seeing the classic and contemporary poster art for so many horror movies, there's something about it that feels very shallow and lazy. Like the film's art department is doing most of the heavy lifting, while the characters here still feel very weak and underwritten. So when compared to the earlier Scream films where entire set pieces were dedicated love letters to classic horror movies, this one just feels like they said "Hey look, we slapped a poster on it, it's a reference", and that's predominantly going to make up most of the references in Scream 4. That's not to say the movie isn't laden with plenty of Easter eggs and other hidden gems, as I'm sure there is still plenty of things you missed on your first, second, or even twentieth time watching it. But Scream 4 is basically just what it set out to be, a commentary on the state of the horror genre in the 2000s. It neither adds, nor takes away anything from the franchise, as it really just serves to be a fun round of horror movie trivia. But I find that when Scream 4 steps outside of the 2000's era box it created for itself and begins to homage the horror movies that inspired the franchise in the first place, that's when the movie really starts to shine. Regardless, it's still a notch in the franchise belt, and the next step along the way to Scream 5, aka Scream 2022, aka 5cream. So in spite of this possibly being a weaker entry, and one that I can't find as many quality references for, I still think it's a terrific movie.
