In this tutorial I turn a second hand glass container into a beautiful cactus terrarium. I love thrifting because it gives new life to items that might otherwise be tossed, and when I found this perfect piece of glass I knew it would become a desktop desert. To start, I pour in a drainage layer using aquarium sand and build up different layers of colored sand to create a decorative design. This not only keeps cactus roots from sitting in water but also gives the base a vibrant, layered look. Next I add a few scoops of cactus and succulent soil mix and slope it back to give the terrarium more depth. A piece of driftwood I found on another thrifting trip becomes the hardscape. I cut it down, position it in the container and secure it so it won’t shift. After that I prep the plants removing excess soil, brushing off the roots and popping off a couple of silver ball cactus pups to use later. Using the end of a brush I make planting holes, then nestle each cactus into place at slightly different depths so the arrangement feels natural. I backfill soil around the roots to hold them in place and brush away any stray dirt. Once the main plants are set, I cover the remaining exposed soil with a thin layer of sand for a “desertscape” vibe. The silver ball cactus pups are pushed past the sand into the soil to take root. To finish, I decorate the terrarium by adding larger stones to balance the driftwood and then fill the gaps with smaller stones for texture. The final piece goes in a spot with bright direct or indirect light where it can thrive.
