A video showing Dublin Bus route 46A (Phoenix Park - Dun Laoghaire), recorded throughout 2024. On the 26th January 2025, the E-Spine changes for Bus Connects were implemented across a large part of Dublin (and part of Wicklow). This saw changes to bus routes in Greystones, Bray, Dun Laoghaire, Ballymun and elsewhere. The main change was the actual "E-Spine" which saw the end of routes 46A, 145 and 155, and them being replaced by new cross-city routes E1 and E2. Route 46A is the oldest of these three routes, dating back to around 1926. Initially running between the city centre and Cabinteely, it reached Goatstown in 1933 before reaching Dun Laoghaire full time in 1936 (some departures had reached there in 1929). The route operated via Donnybrook, Stillorgan and Deansgrange. In 2010 its city terminus was moved to Infirmary Road, beside the Phoenix Park, when the route replaced route 10 along the North Circular Road. Initially the 46A did a loop through O'Devaney Gardens to reach the Phoenix Park terminus (as had the 10). However, in more recent years due to the redevelopment of the area, the buses on the 46A had to operate empty down Infirmary Road to Parkgate Street in order to turn around. The 46A was a very frequent route, especially since 1999 when the Stillorgan Quality Bus Corridor (QBC) was introduced. At the busiest times of the day, it operated every 8 mins, while rest of the time it operated every 10 mins (going to every 15 mins at the extreme ends of the day). For the last few years the route has mainly been operated by the PA Class (Enviro 400ER) although other types of buses can appear on it. From 2005 to 2018, it was home to the tri-axle VT Class (Enviro 500). Dublin Bus operated this route out of Donnybrook Depot. To mark the last day of this historic bus route, a number of preserved buses along with two current Dublin Bus vehicles did a special run along the route, ending up at Donnybrook Depot. Some of these vehicles appear in this video. This video is part three of four showing the ending of some key routes before the E-Spine changes.
