Did you know that the University of Arizona Marching Band played the half-time show at the first Super bowl? On January 15th, 1967, the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off in the AFL-NFL World Championship at the Los Angeles Coliseum. That game is now known as the first Super Bowl. The pre-game and half-time show was performed by the University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band. Helmed by the innovative composer and director Jack Lee, they were one of the best bands in the country and often referred to as the “Best in the West.” Trumpet player Larry Paxton and piccolo player Ray Martinez were UA sophomores when they played in the Super Bowl. Larry and Ray now play for the Pride of Arizona Alumni Band and still show up on game day to play for Wildcat tailgaters.
