Elisa J. F. Houwink, MD, PhD, a Consultant in Family Medicine and Genomics at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares insights into her article appearing in the January 2026 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where she highlights the ideal nature of primary care physicians in implementing the benefits of genomic testing for inherited diseases among at risk individuals. Dr. Houwink notes genomic innovations, including pharmacogenomics, are becoming increasingly relevant to routine medical care and hold promise for advancing prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment in primary care. She reviews some of the barriers to this goal, including a fragmented healthcare system, national recommendations marked by variability in reimbursement, lack of clinician training, and infrastructure across regions. Authored in conjunction with a multidisciplinary Mayo Clinic taskforce, Dr. Houwink examines the clinical, ethical, and implementation aspects of genomic services for adult primary care patients. Additionally, Dr. Houwink discusses the integration of AI in implementing genomic care for the benefit of patients and reduction of the consequences of inherited diseases.
