In 2018, the Minnesota DNR introduced a policy to increase timber production on state-managed forests, including Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) that are supposed to preserve wildlife habitat. At the same time, the agency has increasingly ignored foresters’ input on how to manage these lands. Forester Martha explains the impact of these policy & practice changes during our walk through a section of the Canosia WMA that was clear-cut for timber harvesting.
