Wood Bed Install on Lucky Costa's Supercharged LS-Swapped 1967 Chevy C10

In this episode, I tear out the old wood bed on my C10 and install brand-new wood! I’d love to hear your thoughts—drop a comment and let me know what you think of the new bed. A big thanks to all of you for your feedback and for helping me choose the right color! History of my C10, credit to Hot RodaSitting behind the wheel of Lucky Costa's '67 Chevy C10, the thought struck me like a bolt of lightning. I was surprised just how similar it felt to mine, but just how different at the same time. I've had my '67 C10 project, Truck Norris, for more than eight years, and it has gone through several iterations and transformations from stock, worn-out farm truck to whatever adjectives you'd use to describe it now. Lucky has owned his '67 C10 for a slightly shorter period of time, but it has gone through an even bigger transformation. It was literally a pile of parts when he started—I was there. It was assembled from parts that the previous owner/hoarder had squirreled away in one of those backyard shops and E-Z Up/tarpaulin structures so common here in Southern California. The frame was stored on its side against a wall, the cab was in the bed of another truck, and I don't even remember where the bed was dredged up from. Everything was covered in racoon excrement, and the day-long experience had me wondering if I was current on my tetanus and rabies shots! Nevertheless, the previous owner had enough parts on hand to assemble a rolling chassis. Lucky and I built the thing in the guy's driveway on a sunny California Saturday, and by 6:00 pm the C10 was being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck and delivered to Lucky's shop. Since then, Lucky has been diligently working on it in his spare time. He got it running with a basic 5.3-liter LS engine and 4L60E combo. That got replaced with a turbocharged 5.3 that caused the trans to slip. The new transmission is a Stage IV 4L80E from Gearstar, and he eventually replaced the turbo engine with a fresh 5.3, also built for boost, but in the form of a Magnuson supercharger, which makes sense. Lucky said the turbo was fun, but if you spend more than one second in the car with him you will know that his driving style favors the instant response of a supercharger. Stefan Rossi at ACE Racing Engines in Torrance, California, built the supercharged engine with all the good stuff. He started with an aluminum LC9 engine block, and added CP pistons, Callies rods, and Total Seal rings. Trick Flow cylinder heads are on top, and Stef slid in a custom cam spec'd by Nick Evdos at Brian Tooley Racing. The 2300 MagnaCharger delivers a modest 10 pounds of boost, which is plenty safe for the engine's 10.5:1 compression ratio. Local guy Tuner Tom set the Holley Terminator EFI system up just right, and Lucky recons he's making well north of 700 hp at the wheels. Aside from the drivetrain, he radically changed the performance of the truck with QA1's coilover conversion, which includes tubular front control arms, rear trailing arms, sway bars, and their double-adjustable coilover shocks. To that combo he added massive disc brakes from Baer with 14-inch rotors and six-piston calipers on the front, and 13-inchers with four-piston calipers on the back. The wheels are custom-made by Esanjian and have a similar appearance to NASCAR steelies. Inside the 9-inch axle housing is an Eaton Detroit Truetrac limited slip differential and a set of 3.73:1 gears. A massive smoke show from the 295/45R18 Hankook Ventus ST tires is accomplished easily and often when Lucky is driving, and he has already burned through two sets of tires back there. Though the exterior still looks like it had been pulled from under a tarp, don't be fooled. Lucky has replaced a door, front fender, tailgate, and hood that were a little worse for wear. The red oxide primer finish is actually paint in some spots to match the cool, weathered look of the rest of the exterior. Inside, the split bench seat is from a Chevy GMT400 pickup (1988-1998), and Lucky added a set of Dakota Digital VHX gauges to monitor the engine's functions. A Vintage Air HVAC system keeps cabin temps in check. Otherwise, it's basic, vintage C10 in there, and that's a good thing. An interesting bit of trivia is that the cab and frame of the truck was originally owned by the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It was one of their fleet of vehicles that serviced fire hydrants around the county. You can see remnants of the Fire Department logo and lettering on the passenger-side door.
