Greenville, South Carolina — On November 23, 2024, at approximately 2:18 a.m., the Greenville County Communication Center received a 911 call from an individual threatening to "do something stupid" at 6 Kmart Plaza in Greenville. Deputies arrived shortly after at the store’s parking lot, where they encountered the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Daziana Lewis. Deputies attempted to assist Lewis, but she suddenly produced a knife, raised it aggressively, and moved toward them. In response, one deputy drew his firearm and issued verbal commands to de-escalate the situation, while another deputy deployed a taser as a non-lethal option. Despite striking Lewis, the taser had no effect. Deputies continued issuing verbal commands while retrieving a beanbag shotgun from a vehicle as an additional non-lethal measure. Efforts to persuade Lewis to surrender peacefully resumed after her initial attempt to harm the deputies. However, after a brief standoff and failed negotiations, Lewis raised the knife again and advanced toward the deputies in a threatening manner. At this point, deputies fired, striking her. On-scene deputies provided medical aid until EMS arrived and transported Lewis to the hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. The knife was collected and secured as evidence by agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
