We asked the Nigerians studying at Osmania University two things: "How old is Nigeria?" and "Can you sing the National Anthem?" In his Independence anniversary speech, President Goodluck Jonathan stated his administration goals to battle against corruption, insecurity and electricity shortages. "Many Nigerians have acknowledged that there has been a significant decline in the spate of security breaches," he said. However, despite such claims, for security reasons the President broadcast his speech from Aso Rock with no anniversay celebrations in Eagle Square, Abuja. "On this special day, I call on every Nigerian to remain steadfast, because our nation is indeed making progress. I call on every Nigerian to rediscover that special spirit that enables us to triumph over every adversity as a people," the President asked Nigerians. The US President gave this congratulatory message to Nigerians on the 52nd anniversary: "We value this partnership and remain dedicated to working together to meet the challenges of the future. On the 52nd anniversary of your independence, I wish all Nigerians a peaceful and prosperous year."
