ATTICA: Virtual Q&A with Director/Producer Stanley Nelson and Co-Director/Producer Traci A. Curry

Moderated by USC School of Cinematic Arts MFA Candidate Nana Adwoa Frimpong on Tuesday, February 1st, 2022. ABOUT ATTICA On Sept. 9, 1971, over 1,200 inmates at the Attica correctional facility in Attica, NY, seized the yard at the maximum-security prison, took more than three dozen guards and civilian employees hostage, and demanded more humane treatment and better conditions. For five days, the world watched as TV news cameras covered the story from both outside and inside the prison, as journalists and a team of negotiators converged at the scene. But when law enforcement was ordered by New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to retake Attica, the resulting massacre by state police left 29 inmates and 10 hostages dead — the deadliest violence Americans had inflicted on each other in a single day since the Civil War. Before the smoke from the tear gas cleared, police tortured inmates behind the walls. No charges were ever brought against authorities for the killings of inmates and guards. It was the largest prison rebellion in U.S. history. Now, on the 50th anniversary of the Attica uprising, Emmy-winning director STANLEY NELSON and producer and co-director TRACI A. CURRY examine one of the most shocking incidents in the nation’s history in the extraordinary, in-depth documentary ATTICA. ABOUT THE GUESTS STANLEY NELSON (Director, Producer) Stanley Nelson is today’s leading documentarian of the African-American experience. His films combine compelling narratives with rich historical detail to illuminate the under-explored American past. A MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Nelson has received nearly every award in broadcasting, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, and lifetime achievement awards from the Emmys, the Peabody Awards, and the International Documentary Association. In 2016, Nelson was honored with the National Medal in the Humanities from President Barack Obama. In 2020, Nelson’s film Freedom Riders was added to the National Film Registry from the Library of Congress. In 2019, the film Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool became Nelson’s 10th Sundance premiere, and first Grammy nomination for Best Music Film in 2020. In the same year, Nelson’s four-hour series Vick, about the complicated life and times of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, premiered on ESPN’s 30 for 30 to rave reviews. Nelson's latest feature films include ATTICA, a film that documents the 1971 prison uprising for Showtime; the Emmy-nominated Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre, with Marco Williams, for the History Channel; and Crack: Cocaine, Corruption & Conspiracy, a harrowing look at the crack epidemic of the 1980s, for Netflix. With his wife, Marcia A. Smith, Nelson co-founded Firelight Media, a non-profit organization that supports and develops nonfiction filmmakers of color. Firelight Media’s Documentary Lab has supported over 100 filmmakers, whose films have premiered in theaters and on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Their films have won Emmy and Peabody Awards and garnered accolades from festivals and critics alike. TRACI A. CURRY (Co-Director, Producer) Traci A. Curry is a national award-winning producer, director, and writer of powerful stories, with more than two decades of experience in creating compelling, in-depth narratives for multi-media platforms, including long- and short-form documentaries. She also served as a producer for several national cable news shows. Traci's work has been featured across a variety of networks, including PBS, ESPN, MSNBC, BET, HGTV, TV One, CNN, and ABC.She is co-director and producer of the upcoming documentary feature, “ATTICA,” airing on Showtime during the fall of 2021, and selected as the opening night documentary at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival. Traci is also the founder and owner of her production company, B.Free Media, named to honor her hero, pioneering journalist Ida B. Wells and her newspaper, The Memphis Free Speech, which was burned in 1892 following Wells' groundbreaking exposé of lynching in the South.A firmly transplanted resident of Brooklyn, New York, Traci received a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Journalism, and a bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Pennsylvania.
