Locomotives come in many shapes, sizes, and power ratios. Some are the heaviest. Others are the strongest, able to pull the largest of trains. But some, for reasons unclear, are a little overkill. Unnecessary. They're compensating for something, is what I mean. 0:00 - Intro 1:03 - Iranian Railways AD43C 3:40 - Electroputere LE5100 5:43 - MTAB Iore 7:21 - Virginian Railway No. 700 XA 10:23 - ATSF 3000 class 12:30 - Virginian Railway class AE "The AD43C is a type of mainline 6 axle Co'Co' diesel locomotive designed by Alstom and used by the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (RAI). It was in production from 2000. Delivery started in 2002. Alstom designated the vehicle with product code Prima DE 43 C AC." "The Electroputere LE 5100, otherwise known as CFR Class 40/41/42 is a family of electric locomotives (separated by 3 classes) built for the Romanian Railways (CFR) for use on the Romanian electrified network. Over 1000 Class 40s were constructed by Electroputere (EP) under ASEA license in EPs Craiova Works from 1967 to 1991. Entering service in 1965, the Class 40 also operated on private railroads after the repeal of CFRs monopoly on rail transport. The vast majority of all the engines are still in service, as of 2020, having become an icon for the Romanian Railways." "Iore, often stylized IORE, is a class of 34 electric locomotives built by Adtranz and its successor Bombardier Transportation for the Swedish mining company LKAB's railway division Malmtrafik. The class is a variation of Adtranz's Octeon modular product platform, thus related to Bombardier's later TRAXX platform. The locomotives haul iron ore freight trains on the Iron Ore Line and Ofoten Line in Sweden and Norway, respectively. The 8,600-tonne (8,500-long-ton; 9,500-short-ton) 68-car trains are hauled by two single-ended Co′Co′ locomotives, each with a power output of 5,400 kW (7,200 hp). Each operates with 600 kilonewtons (130,000 pounds-force) tractive effort and has a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph)." "Another very similar designed Triplex was built by Baldwin as a 2-8-8-8-4 for the Virginian Railway, as No. 700, in 1916. This triplex was given classification of "XA", so named due to the experimental nature of the locomotive. The 2-8-8-8-4 was considered unsuccessful because it only made a maximum speed of 3–5 miles per hour and had high maintenance costs. The XA was sent back to Baldwin Locomotive Works where it was taken apart in 1920 and converted into a 2-8-8-0 and a 2-8-2. These two engines were in service until 1953. Neither of the two engines were preserved." "In 1911 and 1912, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway modified 10 2-10-2 Baldwin-built locomotives into a new 2-10-10-2 configuration dubbed the 3000 class. They were the largest locomotives in the world from their introduction until 1914. They performed well in helper service, but could only go 10 to 15 mph (16 to 24 km/h) before losing steam. The ATSF returned them to their 2-10-2 configurations between 1915 and 1918." "These ten locomotives were built in 1918 by ALCO for the Virginian Railway. With a width of 144 inches (3,658 mm), they were delivered without their cabs and front low-pressure cylinders; and were assembled after delivery. The 48-inch (1,219 mm) low-pressure cylinders (on 90-inch or 2,286-millimetre centers) were the largest on any U.S. locomotive; the cylinders had to be inclined a few degrees to provide clearance." 🟢Join this channel to get access to perks: / @historyinthedark 🟢Patreon - / darknessthecurse 🟣Discord - / discord 🔵Facebook - / history-in-the-dark-109003305113711 🟢Donations - https://streamlabs.com/edgerabbit/tip 🔴Reddit - / historyinthedark 🔴Tiktok - / historyinthedark 🟣Instagram - / historyinthedark 🔵Twitter - / darkthecurse 🟣Merch - / @historyinthedark 🟣Twitch - / edgerabbit Other channels: 🟢Prehistory in the Dark: / @prehistoryinthedark 🟣Gaming and Fanfic Readings: / @darknessthecurse 🟣History Stuff: / @historyinthedark 👔Merch: https://streamlabs.com/edgerabbit/merch --- I WRITE BOOKS!
