This image is representative of the lasting influence of Western engravings on Indian painting. From the 16th century onwards in India, the presence of Jesuit missionaries who travelled with European engravings, and the exchange of royal portraits between the Mughal and French courts, led to the discovery of these images, which had a major impact on Mughal painting.
