Costa Concordia captain Schettino barks out contradictory orders after the ship runs aground off Giglio, in newly released audio from the ship's data recorder. The black box has been presented to an Italian court for use during a pretrial hearing in Grosseto, Tuscany. The audio extract, which will be analysed by the court, records the captain as saying "Let's go and do a salute (to Giglio)". But as the ship approached dangerously close to the shore, he told the Indonesian helmsman to swing the rudder hard to starboard, "otherwise we go on the rocks." Capt Schettino then frantically ordered the crew to close the water-tight compartments deep in the bowels of the ship. The hearing is being attended by Capt Francesco Schettino, the former captain of the Costa Concordia which capsized nine months ago with the loss of 32 lives. Judges will decide whether to send him to trial for the disaster, one of the biggest in Italy's maritime history. The hearing could last up to a week, at the end of which he could be charged with abandoning ship, contravening the laws of the sea and multiple counts of manslaughter. The hearing was attended by lawyers who are seeking tens of millions of pounds in compensation for victims and survivors from Genoa-based Costa Cruises and its American parents company, Carnival Corporation.
