Members and Friends of Bethel Church, It's the 2nd Sunday in the season of Lent and the first Sunday in March. As has been our custom, we will not be serving Holy Communion today; each year we forego the Lord's Supper in observance of Lent. But what we will do is gather to offer God praise and prayer. Led by our Praise Choir we'll sing of Jesus' power and love, made most evident on the Cross of Calvary. But we're not there yet. On our way, we'll meet a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish Pharisee, a member of the Sanhedrin. Nicodemus is entrenched in religious law and observes all the customs of the Jewish faith. He meets Jesus at night to uncover his recipe for the wonderful works he does. But what Nicodemus receives is not a recipe for the miraculous but a lesson in faithfulness. Jesus reminds Nicodemus and by extension, he reminds us, that good works are not a recipe for salvation. Rather, one's personal redemption is a gift of God. After worship, we'll enjoy a Pancake Breakfast to support the music program; in particular to help defray the cost of some much needed repairs for our 1914 Wicks Organ; who, at her age, is deserving of some maintenance and rehabilitation. Then, while we're eating, I'll spend a few minutes recapping Bethel's Mitten Project to date, and to encourage additional members to join in our daily Lenten devotional (Knowing God for Kids) designed especially for families and their children. Junior Church/Sunday School continues this week in the lower level following the Time with Children. If you know of any child interested in participating, please know how welcome they are to join us!
