This is in the South Pennines near the border between Lancashire and West Yorkshire. The bird we are looking at is the largest wading bird in Europe; and it is called a Curlew. It is in the same scientific group of birds as Sandpipers, Snipes and Phalaropes. In the UK, Curlews use different habitats depending on the time of year. In the winter, you’d normally expect to see the Curlew on estuaries, tidal mudflats, and nearby farmland. In the colder months, some curlews fly in from Scandinavia too. In the summer, many of our Curlew migrate to moorland habitats. They seem especially keen on rough pasture, heather moorland, bogs and wetlands The Curlew has a long downward curving bill, brown upperparts and long legs. If you don’t see one, you should be able to recognise the presence of Curlew in the area if you hear the evocative bubbling call. Curlews lay their eggs in a scrape in the ground and they incubate the eggs for four weeks. The chicks leave the nest and roam around with their parents for about four weeks. Most Curlew chicks are fully fledged by about a month. As at 2025, the population of Curlew has massively declined for a variety of reasons. Converting wetlands and moorlands badly affects curlew numbers; as does the impact of predators, such as foxes who take eggs and chicks. Also, disturbance by people and dogs. The Curlew is now on the Red List. This is part on the UK Conservation Status Report. This means that urgent action is needed with Curlews having highest conservation priority. The Curlew we have filmed here has been using its sensitive beak to probe the soft ground for worms. If Curlews are at the coast they will search for shellfish and shrimps as well.
