Mortal Kombat II Star Says Playing the Game's Most Legendary Villain Was an Honor and Privilege

Bodybuilder and actor Martyn Ford is getting ready to step into some very big shoes. The 6'8", 350-pound star is playing the iconic video game villain Shao Kahn in this fall's Mortal Kombat II, and it still hasn't fully sunk in yet for him. Ford spoke about playing the role with Collider's Perri Nemiroff at San Diego Comic Con, where he's promoting his new fantasy action film Red Sonja. He discussed what it was like taking on the role, and how the franchise's fanbase has embraced the movie: "For me, the past 2 or 3 years have been incredible. To have it, land on my desk as it did. I was in Italy at the time filming, and I remember getting the phone call thinking it was a prank call, to be honest. 24 hours later, I was on the airplane to Australia from Italy just to meet them and got offered the part and came back home. I'm filming and when I went out again, it was so surreal. I honestly don't think it's sunk in yet. We've broken all sorts of records with the trailer release. It's incredible to be part of that franchise. It's incredible to be here today. I feel that every role that I've done has kind of led to that. It was a phenomenal opportunity and an absolute honor and privilege to play Shao Kahn." First introduced in the 1993 video game Mortal Kombat II, Shao Kahn is the emperor of the hellish alternate dimension Outworld, where the Mortal Kombat tournament takes place. A master of dark sorcery and martial arts, he is one of the most iconic villains of the long-running fighting game series. He made his first live-action appearance in 1997's Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, where he was played by towering character actor Brian Thompson (The X-Files). The first big-screen adventure for the flame-haired barbarian heroine in forty years, Red Sonja stars Matilda Lutz (Magpie) as Sonja, a woman who seeks revenge against Dragan the Magnificent (Robert Sheehan, The Umbrella Academy), the brutal tyrant who massacred her people, and his merciless assassin, Dark Annisia (Wallis Day, Krypton). It was directed by M. J. Bassett (Silent Hill: Revelation), and will hit theaters on August 15, 2025. Mortal Kombat II will be released on October 24, 2025.
