Skating at hamilton audubon Sanctuary 2 16 26 I skated on the New Meadows “River” in West Bath: really a 12-mile-long tidal embayment in Maine at the northern end of Casco Bay. The most recent satellite from 2/12/26 showed promising ice running from Back Cove down past Long Island on the west, and along the Phippsburg shore on the East. Authors note: (The Copernicus satellite has now gone 7 days without a new image: probably on February Break…). The Hamilton Audubon Sanctuary opens each day from dawn to dusk. Even though I tried to get on as early as they opened up, the ice was already soft. There was a lot of ice up to Foster Point (over 6 pokes, over 4” by ice screw) but the bright sun and high temperatures these past 5 days have changed the outlook from 2/12/26. Now there is open water across Foster Point and the ice gets very thin before there. There is no path to check the east or west side ice seen on the old satellite. The question occurred to me: “Am I scrounging for ice?” The answer is “Yesss?” And “Noooo?” As Richard Behr and Tommy Thompson say, just going to these beautiful natural winter places is awesome: it’s like finding a little new paradise here and there. The Audubon trails are extra beautiful (I took the red trail, to the blue, then the green) and I’m super pumped I got to see this beautiful place (even if it is not very skaty…) Ps: I do think this ice might have been pretty nice 5 days ago, (especially the ice by the Bushy Isle View Town Dock in Phippsburg) but the low tides were at 2:00 am and the evening temps in the high 30’s… sooo.
