Yet evidence is now emerging, revealing the existence of a vibrant city inhabited from the 4th century BC by a people of caravanners: the Nabataeans. In recent years, several international teams have begun new excavations on this extraordinary site. This time, archaeologists have focused on Petra’s city center, where they are conducting an extensive research program. The goal: to understand how this once-nomadic people became sedentary and developed an architectural vision worthy of the great Hellenized cities such as Alexandria or Pergamon.
