Located in the county of Essex, and around 40 miles east of central London, is the town of Rochford. The name 'Rochford' is believed to derive from 'ræcc ford', meaning 'shallow river crossing of the hunting dogs'. It should be noted that the naming of the River Roach that runs through the town is a back formation, i.e. it was named after Rochford, and not the other way around. The river was originally called the Walfleet. In the 13th century a market charter was granted to Rochford by Henry III. The market was set up at the junctions of the roads now known as North Street, East Street, South Street and West Street. A market hall opened here in 1707. It consisted of a covered market place, a prison, a shelter for livestock, a wool store and barbershop. In 1861 the market hall was demolished after being deemed structurally dangerous. The manor house known as Rochford Hall was built in the 13th century just to the southwest of the town centre. During the reign of Henry VIII it was owned by Thomas Boleyn and was the marital home of his daughter Mary Boleyn, sister of Anne Boleyn. Today the hall is owned by Rochford Hundred Golf Club, where it acts as the clubhouse, which is Grade I listed. In 1820 a town pump was installed in Rochford Market Square. With the coming of domesticated water supply, the pump became redundant, and in 1902 a fountain was put in its place (featured in the walk). In 1889 the railway arrived in Rochford courtesy of Great Eastern Railway. Today it provides direct links both to London via Shenfield, and to Southend-on-Sea. Although it should be noted that Southend is only three miles away. Closer still is the misleadingly titled London Southend Airport, which is just one mile south of Rochford. Famous people from Rochford include musician Jamie Cullum (although raised in Wiltshire) and Countdown co-presenter Rachel Riley. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
