We made these videos to show you the this is a practical way to lead on the guitar. It does not require virtuosity. The melody is already present in the chords you are playing. You can bring it out with a pick or fingerstyle technique. Please don’t imagine that this is very difficult and give up before you start. You can play this style. This is how we (LGA members) lead our congregations providing the melody line and accompaniment. With any luck, you have some other instrumentalist to accompany you. The more you integrate melody into your playing the more confident the congregation will become. If you are just strumming the congregation may be left doubting themselves. When do I come in? Where is the melody going? Organists and pianists provide the melody along with the accompaniment so people know what to sing and when to sing. Choose a one of our videos, slow it down, break it into sections and practice. It will get easier with each subsequent hymn. Your guitar will need to be amplified to be useful to the congregation.
