Surendran, widely recognized by his stage name Indrans, was born on March 16, 1956. He is an Indian actor and former costume designer known for his work in Malayalam cinema. Indrans began his career in the film industry in 1981, initially as a costume designer and actor, and gained significant recognition in 1994 with the comedy film CID Unnikrishnan B.A., B.Ed. He became well-known for his comedic performances during the 1990s and 2000s. In the later stages of his career, he achieved success in character roles, earning a National Film Award for Special Mention for his role in the film Home in 2023. Additionally, he received the Kerala State Film Award for Special Mention for his performance in Apothecary in 2014. In 2018, Indrans was honored with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his work in Aalorukkam. His portrayal in Veyilmarangal also earned him the Best Actor Award at the 2019 Singapore International Film Festival. By November 2021, he had appeared in more than 550 films.Indrans was born on March 16, 1956, as the third of seven children to Palavila Kochuvelu and Gomathi in Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram. He has two brothers and four sisters.Due to financial difficulties at home, Indrans apprenticed with his uncle to learn tailoring. Subsequently, he became involved in amateur arts clubs, where he began his journey in acting. His television career commenced with the serial "Kaliveedu," aired on Doordarshan. Together with his brother, K. Jayakumar, he established a tailoring business called Indran's Brothers Tailors in Kumarapuram, Thiruvananthapuram.Indrans made his acting debut in the 1981 film Choothattam, where he also served as a costume designer. The producer, TMN Charley, provided him with the opportunity to assist in costume design, leading to several years of work in that capacity while he took on various minor acting roles. His performance as a marriage broker in the 1993 film Meleparambil Anveedu garnered attention. Indrans achieved significant recognition with his role in CID Unnikrishnan B.A., BEd (1994), which opened the door for him to portray numerous comedic characters in 1990s films. His slender physique, unique dialogue delivery, and distinctive mannerisms contributed to his popularity as a comedian in Malayalam cinema during this era. Notable films featuring his memorable performances include Malappuram Haji Mahanaya Joji, Manathe Kottaram, Vadhu Doctoranu, Aadyathe Kanmani, and Aniyan Bava Chetan Bava. He portrayed the character "Uthaman" in the 1998 cult classic Punjabi House, and his collaborations with Harishree Ashokan resulted in several successful films.In the early 2000s, Indrans began to take on minor character roles. His portrayal of a thief in the 2004 film Kathavasheshan marked his emergence as a character actor. In Rahasya Police (2009), he was revealed to be the film's antagonist at the conclusion, and he took on another villainous role in Pottas Bomb (2013). For his performance in the 2014 film Apothecary, Indrans received the Kerala State Film Award – Special Mention. In 2016, Indrans gained recognition for his serious role in the film Munroe Thuruth, directed by Manu. Following this, he continued to take on serious character roles, appearing in films such as Kaadu Pookunna Neram (2016) and God Say (2017). He also played significant roles in Makkana, Lonam, Paathi, and Buddhanum Chaplinum Chirikkunnu. In 2018, he was honored with the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2017 film Aalorukkam. The following year, he received the Best Actor award at the Singapore South Asian International Film Festival for his performance.
