This is excerpt from Wasim Akram Autobiography 1998 : ANOTHER FINE MESS – CHAPTER 9 Salim won the toss in both one-dayers, at Cape Town and Johannesburg, and each time he didn’t follow the conventional pattern of batting first. We knew that local knowledge always recommneded fielding last at these two venues, because the ball boomerangs about later in the day. All the players were asking openly why we were fielding first after winning the toss, and | could only say I didn’t know the reason. I was now just another player, not part of the management meetings. I felt the new vice-captain, Rashid Latif, was no use at all. To me he was a nice guy, but too keen to fight battles for individuals, trying to be the dressing-room lawyer. He should have just played cricket and supported the captain’s decisions, keeping silent about what they said to each other in private. In my time the vice-captains have often undermined the captain and I don’t understand why they feel the need to get involved in all the political wheeler-dealings After all, nobody blames the vice-captain when things go wrong, it should be a job carried out without fuss and back-biting. During one particular bitter team meeting in Johannesburg, things came to a head. Players were squabbling openly in the room and nobody was listening to the captain. Someone then shouted, ‘What’s all this about the toss and bets?’, a clear reference to Salim’s two costly decisions in the recent one-day matches. We all looked at each other and wild accusations started to fly around. I couldn’t take any more and I stood up to say, ‘This is the worst team meeting I’ve ever been in, where are the manners?’ And I walked out. Others followed me, leaving us in total disarray. Our manager Intikhab realised he had to try to pull things together, otherwise the fall-out would be spectacular and very public. #mandelacup #pakvssa #salimmalik #hansiecronje #matchfixing
