Onset of the climactic phase in the 2011 eruption of Shinmoedake volcano, Kirishima, Japan

The 2011 eruption of the Shinmoedake volcano, Kirishima Volcano Group, southern Kyushu, Japan, had continued from January 19 and reached a climax from the afternoon of the 26th to the evening of the next day. This footage, captured at the beginning, was taken at the Shinyu lookout with ~3.0 km distance from the crater center. At first, whitish vapor was emitted from the crater, and then a dark gray plume containing pumice and ash swallowed it. This volcano, which released a large amount of vesiculated magma at this time, subsequently accumulated lava in the crater between January 28 and 31, and repeated intermittent explosions until September of this year.
