Two customised 1/6th scale figures - an officer and infantryman of the 1st York & Lancaster Regiment, are the focus of this presentation. Scratchbuilt with handmade leather fittings, resin castings from master sculptor Tony Barton and modified, painted uniforms, the figures were topped off with commercial headsculpts which were repainted and modified. These figures were inspired by the painting of the Battle of Tamai in the Sudan by the 19th century British war artist Geoffrey Douglas Giles. The term "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" is derived from Rudyard Kirpling's poem "Fuzzy-Wuzzy" which praises the Hadendoa tribal warriors for their martial prowess, because "for all the odds agin' you, Fuzzy-Wuz, you broke the square." The battle took place on 13 March 1884 during the 1st Sudan War (1884-1885), between a British force under Sir Gerald Graham and a fanatical Mahdist Sudanese army led by Osman Digna. The British force of 4,000 was almost defeated by Digna’s 10,000 man Dervish army, when one of the two brigade squares, was temporarily broken by the Dervishes. Only when the second square moved up in support, after desperate hand-to-hand fighting, was the situation retrieved, with the Dervish army withdrawing into the hinterland.
