The Battle of the Hotels (Arabic: معركة الفنادق, Maʿrakah al-Fanādiq) was a subconflict within the 1975–77 phase of the Lebanese Civil War that occurred in the Minet-el-Hosn hotel district of downtown Beirut. This area was one of the first major battles of the war that began in April 1975. The battle was fought for the possession of a small hotel complex, the St. Charles City Center, adjacent to the gilded Corniche seafront area on the Mediterranean, in the north-western corner of the downtown district of Beirut, and it quickly spread to other areas of central Beirut. The often fierce battles that ensued were fought with heavy exchanges of rocket and artillery fire from the various hotel rooftops and rooms. Sniper fire was commonly utilized. Among the first major battles of the war, the sunconflict began with the battle of the Kantari District on the 23rd of October, where between 300 and nearly 500 Mourabitoun Forces stormed the district and took the 40 story unfinished Murr Tower before spreading the rest of the district, aiming to capture it from roughly 60 Phalangist defenders. While the Phalangist couldn't retake the Murr Tower, the Mourabitoun Fighters still failed to take over the district despite having a number advantage and possession of the Tower, leading the battle to spread in an almost veritcal manner and accumulate to the greater Battle of the Hotels which would last for 5 months and 10 days and kill over 700 combatants (including about 200 LF martyrs) in some of the worst urban and even door to door fighting up until the Bosnian War. The Result was a split Beirut, a Beirut that wouldn't see peace for the next 15 years Today marks fifty years since the Ain El Rummaneh incident on April 13th 1975, where an altercation near a church and an eventual assassination attempt of Pierre Gemayel lead to the infamous Bus Massacre that began decades of bloodshed which we still suffer from today, a country still occupied by foreign powers.
