The Marals Are on the Brink of Extinction. Their population is critically low in all their habitats, including Kyrgyzstan, where they have survived in only two reserves — in Naryn and Talas. In the 19th century, marals were widely distributed in spruce forests. However, by 1980, their numbers in Kyrgyzstan had dropped to approximately 150 individuals. The primary cause of their decline was the human encroachment on wild territories. In Talas Province, marals were last seen in the 1950s. Two years ago, 35 marals were brought to the region from Altai. They now live in the wild but under strict supervision. Who are the people working to restore the maral population in Kyrgyzstan? Where and how is this work being carried out? Why is it so important to them? We'll tell you all about it in this episode. 00:00 Preview 02:48 Besh-Tash Reserve: Observing Ibex and Marals 04:44 The Destruction and Restoration of Ibex Populations 06:12 In Search of Marals 08:20 Noble Deer from Altai in the Talas Mountains 10:56 Surviving Endemics: Tian Shan Marals in the Naryn Reserve 12:56 How Marals Nearly Disappeared from Kyrgyz Mountain Forests 14:52 What Prevents the Relocation of Deer and Other Animals Across Regions to Boost Their Populations 20:22 Work in Reserves and Wildlife Nurseries
