(8 Jun 1995) T/I: 10:18:48 Forces to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) may be cut when the U.N. Security Council reviews the UNAMIR mandate which runs out on Friday (9/6). U.N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali recommended on Monday (5/6) reducing the 5,940-member UNAMIR force by more than half and renewing its mandate for six months. The Rwandan government, anxious to see the withdrawal of all U.N. forces, wants a bigger cut. Rwandan Interior Minister, Seth Sendashonga, said on Tuesday (6/6) the situation in his country had changed drastically in the past year and that U.N. troops were no longer required to serve the same role. Commander of the U.N. forces in Rwanda, Canadian Major General Guy Tousignant, expressed concern that a diminished force will mean a reduction in the number of tasks the U.N. forces are capable of performing. If you have 6,000 troops, you can perform several tasks. If you are being reduced to a smaller number you have to really have specific tasks that are being assigned to you and say "Yes, I can do it with that number of people and no, I can't do it." The second would be a re-orientation of that force to be more action oriented, to have more engineering corps and more technical staff to help us in what we see as their appropriate mission during this time when there is no situation which requires combatants of foreign origin." 2.48 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
