Fiscal conservatives should pay attention to the latest news from NerdWallet – a personal finance site that is forecasting more than $3 billion a year in revenues if all state governments legalize weed. According to the report, California has the most to gain with a predicted income in excess of $519 million – that’s enough to fund the California Department of Parks and Recreation for a year. New York would take the silver with around a quarter of a billion dollars per annum, and seven other states would make in excess of $100 million. These numbers are based on speculation, as it is very difficult to accurately predict what a market that has been so long underground will do when legalized. However, based on current numbers, recent studies reveal the entire legal marijuana industry will be grossing up to $10 billion by 2018. Furthermore, the report did not take into account changes to law enforcement budgets once marijuana prohibition is ended. Which, according to Harvard economist Jeffrey Miron could amount to annual savings of more than $8 billion. Cha-Ching… In Missouri, Democratic candidate Nate Irvin is challenging Republican incumbent Vicky Hartzler for her seat in Congress. 25-year-old Irvin has made campaign-finance reform the focus of his bid for Congress, but he is also becoming a hero in the marijuana community. Irvin is petitioning Governor Jay Nixon to grant clemency to Jeff Mizanskey – a man serving a life sentence for non-violent, marijuana related, crimes. Upon learning that Mizanskey will likely die in prison without the intervention of the governor, Irvin decided to use his campaign to shine a spotlight on Mizanskey’s sentence, which he refers to as “excessive to the point of absurdity.” If elected, Nate Irvin promises to do everything in his power to persuade Governor Nixon to free Mizanskey. Best of luck, Nate… Finally, there are going to be less sleepless nights in Seattle soon. City Attorney Pete Holmes announced Monday that he will dismiss 100 tickets for the public use of marijuana from the first half of 2014 because they were mostly issued by one stoner-hating cop in the Seattle Police Department. The city will also refund the $27 fine to people who have already paid their ticket. Nice. What do you think? Will $3 billion in revenue change conservative minds? Will the legal system ever be just? Comment below and let us know. Thanks for watching 420 Today. Don’t forget to subscribe, and here’s Amanda with the weather…
