BALTA ALBA - trailer eng

Synopsis Balta Alba ENG Synopsis Balta Alba (White Pond) is located in the southeastern district of Bucharest, the Metropolis at the edge of the Eastern World, capital of Romania. The first historical data of this area dates back to 1813, during the fanariot ruler of Walachia, Ioan Gheorghe Caragea. An outbreak of plague killed over 50,000 people, and one of the pits where the dead were jointly buried is located here. The anhydrous lime, which was throwed to cover the dead bodies, was spread afterwards by rain, forming white puddles. During the '60s, the extension of Bucharest formed here one of the classiest neighborhoods of the capital. Most of the new blocks were inhabited by military personnel, teachers, people of culture, but also people from the dreaded “Securitate”, Ceausescu's regime secret police. During the ‘80s, the building of many factories nearby attracted many new working class inhabitants and new blocks of flats were raised. So, Balta Alba became very diverse. Different social classes shared the same blocks. Also, maybe because of these special conditions, the appearance of a very large number of artists, especially musicians, transformed the neighbourhood, from a simple “communist bedroom” to a somehow hip area. It’s even hard to believe that, on just a few square kilometers, hard rock, new wave, avant-garde, hip hop, jazz, electro, classical and traditional music coexisted and flourished. Famous Romanian artists were born and started their careers here: Iris - also known as The National Rock Band of Romania, forbidden three times during communist regime IL-Egal – Romanian hip hop pioneer Timpuri Noi – very ironic new wave band with some trouble in the 80’s (for mocking the communist regime in their lyrics) and big success in the 90’s Partizan – Timpuri Noi reinvented in the 2000’s Marijuana – Balta Alba hip hop band Maxim Belciug – great acoustic guitarist of classic music ...and many more The documentary will reveal the lives of musicians and other artists, real characters, and stories about their careers and the social and cultural environment that affected their lives. In this sense, the stories will be shown in a chronological order. The 80's were hard years for Romania. Ceasusescu intended to pay off all the Romanian external debts by limiting internal consumption. So, electric power was turned off a few times per day, the flats were scarcely heated during wintertime, food was rationed and the TV station broadcasted only 2 hours per day. This is the moment when the pressure of the regime (secret police and communist party) reached its peak. Almost every block of flats had an informer, sending monthly reports regarding neighbors' activities. Rock musicians had difficulties to perform on the scene, many of them being forbidden by the culture committees of the Communist regime. After the Revolution of 1989, the 90s were socially and politically confusing. However, Romania experienced a musical boom in rock and jazz. Also, in Balta Alba, one of the first hip-hop movements in Romania, emerged. It was basically the first time in Romania, when a well-defined map had its own music. Following the 2000s up to today, Balta Alba has seen a relative development, that is easily noticed. Typical old stores, from the blocks’ ground floors, like tabacco shops, haberdasheries, and sweetshops, were transformed into banks, betting agencies, pawn shops and pharmacies. There are 3 generations of musicians, still strongly influencing not only Bucharests’ but also Romanias’ artistic scene. Balta Alba means over 30 years of artistic and creative work and sad and funny stories.
