The river, which is fed by the spring, maintains a refreshing 72-degree temperature year-round, making it a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, tubing, and paddle boarding. It is one of Florida’s largest freshwater springs and one of the clearest springs in Florida, ranked at the top with Ginnie Springs, Silver Glen Springs, and Ichetucknee Springs! We started out paddling from the Rainbow Springs State Park campground against the current toward the headspring, paddling by beautiful homes, passing over a variety of aquatic plants, and searching for wildlife. What a pristine setting, partly due to the river’s protected status which helps preserve its natural beauty. The river is home to a wide variety of animals including alligators, turtles, fish, and otters. What an adventure! We ended our time camping overnight in our Ford Transit camper van at the Rainbow Springs State Park campground, cooking out, and enjoying the unlimited utilities.
