Pythagorean vs Just Intonation | A Paradox of Playing in Tune

Want to play better in tune on the violin? Here is a brief overview of the pythagorean and just intonation tuning systems. In addition to having a good sense of relative pitch and left hand fundamentals, string players also need to have a basic understanding of both vertical and horizontal intonation, and through experience learn how to adjust in real time to stay in tune with an ensemble. Just intonation is built on the harmonic series, and pythagorean system is based on perfect fifths. One helps tune harmonies; the other, melodic lines.
