Why should children with families be cared for in orphanages when they can actually be integrated and supported to live with people they love and those who love them. The best way to address the menace of having children on the streets and away from home is enhancing the capacities of impoverished families and strengthening communities so they can take care of these children. The model is tried and tested by OAfrica, operating in Ghana. Lisa Lovatt-Smith is English but was born in Spain. Her life experience of being abandoned at age 4 and being a foster child who was later reunited with her biologically mother gave her a better understanding of how families care for children better than orphanages. This enabled her open a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in rural Ghana OAfrica. Their duty is reunite abandoned children with their extended families. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
